Osteopathic Manual Therapy

Osteopathic Manual Therapy (OMT)

Osteopathic Manual Therapy (OMT) is a gentle and highly effective form of hands-on treatment that focuses on restoring balance and mobility within the body’s structural and functional systems. It is based on the core principle that the body has an innate ability to heal itself — and that dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system can impede that healing.

OMT targets the joints, fascia, muscles, and nervous system to release restrictions, improve circulation, enhance mobility, and support the body’s natural healing processes. It integrates soft tissue work, joint mobilization, myofascial release, cranial sacral techniques, and visceral manipulation, depending on the client’s needs.

This approach is ideal for individuals experiencing postural dysfunction, chronic pain, stress-related tension, and musculoskeletal imbalances. It is also frequently used to support nervous system regulation and optimize overall function and performance.

Benefits of OMT:

  • Reduces pain and stiffness

  • Improves joint and muscle mobility

  • Enhances posture and alignment

  • Supports nervous system balance

  • Promotes relaxation and overall wellness

Common Concerns Treated with OMT:

  • Spinal misalignment

  • Pelvic imbalance

  • Joint stiffness and restricted mobility

  • Postural issues

  • Headaches and TMJ dysfunction

  • Sciatica and nerve compression

  • Digestive and breathing restrictions (via visceral techniques)

  • Birth and newborn traumas (tongue tie, cheek tie, torticollis, colic, ect)

Each session is tailored to your unique structure, health history, and goals.

Clinical Background & Research

Osteopathic Manual Therapy is grounded in principles developed by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in the late 1800s, emphasizing the interconnection between structure and function in health. Though distinct from Osteopathic Medicine (DOs in the U.S.), OMT practiced by trained Manual Osteopaths shares the same biomechanical foundation, minus pharmaceutical or surgical intervention.

Several studies support the effectiveness of OMT in managing musculoskeletal dysfunction:

  • Licciardone et al. (2010) found that OMT significantly reduced pain and improved function in patients with chronic low back pain compared to standard care.
(Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, 110(6), 325–332)

  • Guillaud et al. (2016) reviewed osteopathic interventions and noted improvements in pain and function across a variety of musculoskeletal complaints, supporting its use in multidisciplinary care.
    (BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 17:135)

  • Degenhardt et al. (2018) also highlighted OMT’s role in improving autonomic regulation, supporting its therapeutic benefit for nervous system imbalances.
    (Frontiers in Neuroscience, 12:685)
