What Does Your Posture Have to Do With Your Jaw Pain?

If you struggle with TMJ pain, jaw tension, clenching, headaches, or that feeling that your jaw is simply never relaxed, you probably spend a lot of time thinking about your jaw.

But your jaw doesn’t function in isolation.

The position of your rib cage, shoulders, neck, and head can all influence the muscular environment around the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). That’s one reason treating only the place that hurts doesn’t always create lasting change.

Your Jaw Sits on Top of a Much Bigger System

Think about where your jaw lives.

Your mandible connects to your skull, your skull is supported by your cervical spine, and your cervical spine transitions into your thoracic spine and rib cage. Muscles and fascia connect these regions, while your breathing mechanics continually influence the movement and tone of your neck, chest, and jaw.

Change what’s happening underneath the jaw, and you may change what the jaw has to compensate for.

This is particularly interesting when we look at the shoulders.

Rounded Shoulders Aren’t Just a Shoulder Problem

When the shoulders tend to sit forward, people are often told:

“Pull your shoulders back.”

But simply squeezing your shoulder blades together doesn't necessarily address why the shoulders are sitting forward in the first place.

One area I frequently look at is the front of the chest—particularly the pectoral muscles.

If the pecs are shortened or holding excessive tension, they can contribute to an anterior position of the shoulder girdle. Thoracic mobility, rib-cage position, breathing patterns, and the muscles controlling the scapula also play a role.

Now look a little higher.

As the upper body shifts forward, the head may also begin to sit farther forward relative to the trunk. The muscles of the neck then have to manage that position, potentially increasing activity through areas such as the SCM, scalenes, upper trapezius, suboccipitals, and other cervical muscles.

And some of these structures have important functional relationships with the jaw and hyoid region.

The Neck–Jaw Connection

Try this for a moment.

Sit comfortably and gently bring your head forward.

Notice what happens around your neck and jaw.

Now return your head to a comfortable, stacked position over your rib cage and let your shoulders relax.

Does your jaw feel different?

Head and cervical position can influence mandibular mechanics and muscle activity. This doesn't mean that “bad posture causes TMJ.” TMJ disorders are multifactorial and can involve the joint itself, the disc, muscles, nervous system, dental factors, stress, sleep, breathing, trauma, and other contributors.

But posture and movement are pieces of the puzzle worth assessing—especially when jaw symptoms keep returning.

Breathing Belongs in the Conversation Too

There is another connection we can't ignore: breathing.

Ideally, quiet breathing should be driven largely by the diaphragm with expansion through the lower rib cage.

When breathing becomes more upper-chest dominant, accessory respiratory muscles in the neck may contribute more than necessary. Over time, that can add to an already busy muscular environment around the cervical spine, hyoid, and jaw.

This is one reason I often incorporate diaphragmatic breathing into treatment and home care for people experiencing TMJ dysfunction.

It isn't because breathing is a magical cure for jaw pain.

It's because the jaw is part of a system.

Instead of Forcing Your Shoulders Back…

Rather than spending your day aggressively trying to hold your shoulders “back and down,” consider asking:

What is preventing my body from comfortably getting there in the first place?

You may need to address:

  • Pectoral tension

  • Thoracic mobility

  • Rib-cage mechanics

  • Scapular control

  • Cervical mobility

  • Breathing mechanics

  • Jaw and facial muscle tension

The goal isn't to create a perfectly rigid posture.

The goal is to give your body enough mobility, strength, and options that it doesn't have to work so hard to hold you upright.

And sometimes, when we improve what's happening underneath the jaw, the jaw itself finally has an opportunity to relax.
